09 Jan 5 great restaurants just far enough from the faculty
Having a (way too) long day at the faculty? Try some lunch or Try having dinner just outside the Science Park, in (the rest of) Amsterdam East. It’s close enough so you can get back easily if you need to, but still a refreshing change of scenery. I’ve selected some great and affordable places for you!
- Turkish cuisine (main dish: €5-€15)
- two locations (Pretoriusstraat and Linnaeusstraat)
- fast service
- modern interior
Tip: try the baklava with traditional Turkish tea!
Notice: they don’t always have everything on the menu in stock, so have a second (and third) option ready when you order. Also, they don’t serve alcohol. What?! Yes. But you can get your booze on afterwards in a unique pub just around the corner: Ruk & Pluk.
- wood-fired pizza’s (eat-in and takeaway: €6.50-€13)
- popular among local families
Tip: craving something on the go? – try the pizzetta mezzaluna!
Notice: their website is in Dutch, but they speak English.
- juices, salads and sandwiches (sandwich: €4.50-€7.95)
- seasonal and fresh menu
- great variety of tea and coffee (also available with soymilk), some beers and wine
Tip: this is a great place for a healthy breakfast or lunch, to balance your unhealthy student lifestyle. Bring on the vitamins!
Notice: If you’re lucky, the house cats will honour you with a visit.
- diversity of bagels (€3.75-€7.95)
- delicious coffee
- plenty organic choices
- also takeaway
Tip: go shopping in the Oostpoort and end with a cup of coffee and a slice of their date cake.
Notice: cups and plates never match… And if you ever leave Amsterdam: the chain has more than 50 locations in the Netherlands.
- proper dining
- walking distance
- great Spanish tapas (±€7.-)
Tip: don’t go here when you need food immediately. You might have to wait a while for the tapas.
Notice: they claim to have starters and main dishes, but this doesn’t mean the starters will be served first… Be prepared for a real tapas-experience.
